Bass guitar, backup vocals and more
Vanessa Valentine was raised on a diverse variety of music: Motown, funk, soul, blues, rock, classical, big band & jazz. Her father was a former college radio DJ, a Jazz drummer with Blues & Big Band influences and a singer in his youth. Her mother was a self taught organist, harmonica & percussion player. Vanessa's earliest memories of growing up in Philadelphia in the 1970's, were of live music performances ; R&B, Motown, Jazz, Funk or Soul, with her parents.
She started her personal musical walk through the local Middle School band program, choosing the alto saxophone. Her skills accelerated drastically in Jr. High School through private lessons and the mentoring of NAME, her school Band Director. He had played lead Alto saxophone for the Stan Kenton band, The Temptations, The Nelson Riddle Orchestra & The Harry James Orchestra.
His mentorship lasted 7 years & included Vannesa learning several other instruments, including Tenor and Baritone saxophone, multiple percussion instruments, tri-toms, snare & bass drums, the 2 & 3 valve (F) Mellophone, concert Baritone horn, and a dabbling in cello.
Through High School, she performed and excelled in all aspects of the band programs offered: Marching, Pep, Jazz and Symphonic Band. She was asked, in her Jr. and Senior year of High School, to perform in the local Wilmington College Jazz band as a tenor saxophonist.
Vanessa was encouraged to pursue a career Music. She attended Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, majoring in Computer Engineering and a Minor in Music. She enjoyed a short stint performing originals live on Alto, Tenor saxophone and percussion, with Dayton local Alternative band, Eargasm, (later 'The Exotics') before joining the USAF. She chose instead, to pursued a career and family, continuing to play saxophone for pleasure, teaching her children music and giving private lessons.
Vanessa has built a friendship with Dennis Hoffman. They met at several different open mics he hosted. She is now a proud member of The MoBluz Band, performing on the bass guitar, tambourine, multiple percussion instruments and back-up vocals and bringin Central Texas the Best in Live Blues!!
